The three English fonts used in Indian government typing exams — Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New. All three come pre-installed on Windows. Download guides and keyboard usage tips included.
Choose Your Font
Each font is mandated by specific exams. Pick the one your exam syllabus specifies.
The most widely required font for English government typing exams. Serif design at 12pt is the standard for SSC, UPSC, IBPS, SBI, and most central government clerical tests.
Clean sans-serif font used in banking exams, railway recruitment, and many state government clerical posts. Considered easier to read on screen at smaller sizes.
Classic typewriter-style monospace font. Standard for High Court and District Court stenographer tests, legal transcription posts, and some old-format government typing exams.

Three fonts cover virtually all English government typing examinations in India: Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New. All three are TrueType fonts that come pre-installed with every version of Windows from XP through Windows 11. You do not need to download anything if you are on a Windows PC — simply open MS Word, select the font from the dropdown, and start practising.
Open Microsoft Word (or Notepad), click the font name box at the top, and type the font name (e.g. "Times New Roman"). If it auto-completes and the text changes appearance, the font is installed. If it does not appear, follow the installation guide on the individual font pages above.
SSC CHSL / CGL (Lower Division Clerk): 35 WPM in English. SSC Stenographer Grade C/D: 100 WPM in shorthand + 40 WPM transcription. IBPS Clerk: 30 WPM with 80% accuracy. High Court PA: 30–40 WPM depending on state. Use our timed tests to measure your speed in the exact format each exam uses.
1. Set the correct font before you start any practice session — the character spacing differs between fonts, which affects rhythm. 2. Aim for accuracy first — most exams deduct marks for errors; 98%+ accuracy at 30 WPM beats 85% accuracy at 40 WPM. 3. Practice 5-minute tests — most central government exams use a 5-minute typing duration, so train your stamina for exactly that window.
