Times New Roman is a serif typeface designed by Stanley Morison and Victor Lardent for The Times newspaper in 1931. It has since become the world's most widely used font in formal documents, academic papers, and government correspondence. In India, it is the de-facto standard for English typing examinations conducted by the SSC, IBPS, SBI, and most state public service commissions.
Times New Roman's proportional serif design is highly legible at 12 pt — the font size used by most typing exam evaluation software. Its well-defined letter shapes make it easier for evaluators (human or automated) to assess typed passages for accuracy. The font has been bundled with every version of Microsoft Windows and Office since the early 1990s, ensuring universal availability across government computers.
