Keyboard Layout
The Devanagari Inscript layout (BIS standard). Vowel signs are on the left half; consonants on the right. Orange keys show the Hindi character each key produces.
E=ा R=ी T=ू W=ै Q=ौ A=ो S=े F=ि G=ु
H=प J=र K=क L=त Y=ब U=ह I=ग O=द P=ज
D=् (halant/virama) Z=ं (anusvara) X=ः (visarga with Shift)
Note: The Inscript layout is a BIS standard (IS 16350). Vowel signs (matras) are on the left of the keyboard; consonants on the right — a logical split that speeds up typing after practice.

Practice & Tools
Use our free online tools to build speed and accuracy on the Inscript layout.
Mangal is a Unicode Devanagari font developed by Microsoft and included with all versions of Windows since Windows Vista. Unlike legacy fonts such as Kruti Dev, Mangal stores actual Unicode code points — meaning text in Mangal can be searched, copy-pasted, and processed by any Unicode-aware software without conversion.
The Inscript layout (used with Mangal) arranges keys based on phonetic logic: vowel signs on the left, consonants on the right. The Remington layout (used with Kruti Dev) is derived from old Hindi typewriters. Inscript is the BIS national standard and is faster to learn from scratch, while Remington is preferred by those who learned on typewriters.
Focus on the vowel-sign (matra) keys first: E=ा, R=ी, T=ू, F=ि, G=ु, S=े, A=ो, W=ै, Q=ौ. These nine keys cover the most frequently typed characters in Hindi. Once these are muscle memory, consonant positions on the right side will follow naturally.
Is Mangal already on my PC? Yes, if you are on Windows 7 or later. Open MS Word and type "Mangal" in the font box to confirm. If it appears, you do not need to download anything.
Does Mangal work on Mac? Mangal is a Windows font, but it can be installed on macOS via Font Book. On Mac, you may prefer the built-in Devanagari MT or Kohinoor Devanagari fonts which are Unicode-compatible alternatives.
What is the difference between Mangal and Mangal Regular / Bold? Mangal.ttf is the regular weight. Mangal Bold is a separate file. For typing exams, always use the regular weight unless the exam syllabus specifies otherwise.
