💡 6 Tips to Improve Your Typing Speed
1
Learn Touch Typing First
Place index fingers on F and J. Hunt-and-peck plateaus at 35 WPM; touch typists regularly hit 60–80.
2
Drill the Home Row Daily
ASDFGHJKL covers the most common letters. Make these automatic before moving to other rows.
3
Accuracy First, Speed Second
Target 95%+ accuracy before chasing WPM. 45 raw WPM at 98% beats 60 raw WPM at 80% in every exam.
4
20 Minutes Daily Beats Marathons
Consistent short sessions build muscle memory faster. Warm up with 15s, then do 1–2 min sets.
5
Level Up Difficulty Progressively
Master easy → medium → hard. Practising hard vocabulary makes exam text feel effortless.
6
Simulate Exam Conditions
Use 5 and 10-minute tests on fresh words. Train to type unknown text fast — exam text is always new.
Correct ÷ total keystrokes. Most exams penalise errors — accuracy matters as much as speed.
Raw WPM
Gross Speed
Speed including errors. A large Raw–Net gap means too many mistakes.
Characters
Correct / Total
e.g. 240/255 — aim for a gap under 5% of total keystrokes.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is this English typing test free?
Yes — completely free with no registration, no account creation, and no limit on tests. Open the page and start typing immediately.
How is WPM calculated?
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes. The divisor of 5 is the standard word length used by all Indian government typing boards. Incorrect characters do not count toward WPM. Raw WPM uses the same formula but counts all characters.
What is a good WPM score for a beginner?
Any score above 20 WPM is a solid starting point. Most untrained typists score 20–35 WPM. With consistent daily practice, reaching 50 WPM within 4–6 weeks is realistic for most learners.
Which difficulty should I use for exam preparation?
Medium matches typical government exam vocabulary. Master medium first, then use hard to challenge yourself. Easy is only for complete beginners building initial accuracy.
Time mode or Words mode — which is better?
If your exam has a time limit (e.g. 10 minutes), use Time mode with that duration. If the exam specifies a word count, use Words mode. Alternate both modes in daily practice for well-rounded skills.
Does this work on mobile?
The test requires a physical keyboard. Government typing exams are always on desktop — practise on a desktop or laptop to simulate real exam conditions accurately.
