The Staff Selection Commission released the SSC CHSL 2026 notification on 7 September 2026, opening 2,536 tentative vacancies across three post categories through the Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026. The online application window is live from 7 September to 7 October 2026 on ssc.gov.in.

SSC CHSL is one of the largest 12th-pass recruitment drives in India. It fills clerical and data-entry roles across central government ministries, departments and offices — Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Defence, CAG, CBDT, CBIC, Railways and dozens of subordinate offices. For a candidate who has finished Class 12, this is one of the few routes to a permanent Group C central government job with a pay-matrix salary and full pension-scheme benefits.

Category-wise Breakdown

Not yet published. SSC releases CHSL vacancies as a tentative total at notification stage and publishes the final UR / OBC / SC / ST / EWS / PwBD split department-wise later in the cycle, usually close to the Tier-II stage. The 2,536 figure itself is tentative and SSC has stated it may change. Area / Scope

All India. Candidates from every state and union territory are eligible. Examination centres are spread across SSC's nine regional offices, and you select your preferred centres during the application. Posting can be anywhere in India depending on the department allotted.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

• LDC / JSA / DEO: Passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised Board or University.
• DEO in C&AG offices: 12th pass in the Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognised Board or equivalent.

The qualification must be complete as on the cut-off date stated in the official notification. Candidates awaiting results should read the notification's provisional-eligibility clause carefully before applying.

Age Limit

18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026. Candidates born in the age band specified in the official notification are eligible.

Age Relaxation

Relaxation categories and their exact terms are listed in the official notification. EWS candidates get fee concession rules but no age relaxation.

Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates in the latter categories need an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Important Dates

SSC has not yet fixed the Tier-I date. Treat any specific exam date you see on unofficial sites as a guess until SSC publishes its exam calendar.

Typing Test Requirement

This is the stage where a very large number of otherwise qualified CHSL candidates get eliminated. Clearing Tier-I and Tier-II is an academic exercise; the typing test is a motor skill, and it cannot be learned in the two weeks before the exam. Start now.

For LDC and JSA — Typing Test

• English: 35 words per minute, equivalent to 10,500 key depressions per hour.
• Hindi: 30 words per minute, equivalent to 9,000 key depressions per hour.
• Font for Hindi: Mangal (Unicode). The 2026 notification makes Mangal mandatory for the Hindi typing test. Kruti Dev is not accepted for SSC CHSL. If you have been practising on Kruti Dev, switch now — the keyboard layout is completely different.
• Keyboard layout for Hindi: You choose InScript or Remington (GAIL) at the test centre. Decide early and practise only that one.
• Duration: 10 minutes (approximately 15 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates as per the notification).
• Nature: Qualifying only. You do not earn marks for typing faster than the cut-off — you either clear it or you are out.
• Errors: Mistakes reduce your effective speed. Accuracy matters more than raw speed, because a 40 WPM typist making heavy errors can fail while a clean 36 WPM typist passes.
• Backspace: Backspace is generally enabled in the SSC typing interface, but every correction costs you time. Train yourself to type it right the first time rather than relying on corrections.

For DEO — Skill Test

• DEO (offices other than C&AG): 8,000 key depressions per hour on a given passage.
• DEO Grade 'A' (C&AG / Ministry offices): 15,000 key depressions per hour.
• Duration: 15 minutes on printed matter in English, as specified in the notification.
• Nature: Mandatory and qualifying. DEO candidates cannot skip it.

What You Actually Take Home

Basic pay is only the starting point. On top of it you receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Transport Allowance (TA), with deductions for NPS and CGHS.

• HRA depends on your posting city class — X (metro), Y or Z. A Delhi or Mumbai posting pays substantially more than a small-town posting for the same grade.
• DA is revised twice a year by the central government and applies as a percentage of basic pay.
• Approximate in-hand for an LDC/JSA in an X-class city typically lands in the ₹31,000–₹37,000 range once DA, HRA and TA are added and NPS is deducted. A DEO at Level 4 in the same city is meaningfully higher.

These in-hand figures are estimates. Exact numbers depend on the current DA rate at the time of joining, your city class, and department-specific allowances. Treat them as a planning range, not a promise.

How to Apply (Step by Step)

1. Go to the official website: https://ssc.gov.in
2. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) if you have not already. You will need a valid mobile number, an email ID, your Aadhaar or another identity document, and matriculation details. Your OTR credentials work for every SSC exam.
3. Log in with your OTR registration number and password.
4. Open the "Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026" apply link on the dashboard.
5. Fill in the examination-specific details: post preferences (LDC / JSA / DEO), typing test language preference (English or Hindi), and your preferred examination centres in order of priority.
6. Upload the scanned photograph and signature in the exact dimensions and file sizes specified in the notification. Rejections at this step are common — read the spec before you scan.
7. Pay the application fee online via BHIM UPI, net banking, or a Visa / MasterCard / Maestro / RuPay debit or credit card.
8. Submit the form and download the confirmation page as a PDF. Save and print a copy — you will need it later.
9. If you spot an error, use the correction window from 14 to 16 October 2026. A correction fee applies as specified by SSC.

Do not wait for the last two days. SSC's application portal reliably slows to a crawl in the final 48 hours of every cycle, and a payment that fails at 10:50 PM on the deadline is your problem, not SSC's.

Selection Process

SSC CHSL 2026 selection runs through the following stages. You must clear each one to proceed to the next.

Stage 1 — Tier-I (Computer Based Examination)

An objective multiple-choice paper covering General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language. It is qualifying in nature for shortlisting to Tier-II, with negative marking for wrong answers. Manage your attempt rate rather than guessing blindly.

Stage 2 — Tier-II (Computer Based Examination)

A multi-session, multi-module paper. The 2026 pattern applies separate subject-wise timers to each module — reported as 30, 30, 40, 20 and 15 minutes across the sections — rather than one combined clock. This matters for your prep: you can no longer borrow time from an easy section to rescue a hard one. Tier-II covers Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning and General Intelligence, English Language and Comprehension, General Awareness, and a Computer Knowledge module.

Stage 3 — Skill Test / Typing Test

Conducted as part of the Tier-II process. Qualifying in nature — it contributes no marks to your final merit, but failing it removes you from consideration entirely. Stage 4 — Document Verification

Shortlisted candidates present original certificates: Class 12 marksheet and certificate, date-of-birth proof, category certificate (SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS) in the prescribed central government format, PwBD certificate where applicable, and the downloaded application confirmation page. Category certificates in state formats are routinely rejected — get the central format issued well in advance.

Stage 5 — Final Merit & Allotment

Final merit is prepared on Tier-II marks. Post and department allotment follows merit, your stated preferences, and category-wise vacancy availability.
