How to Set Up Raavi Punjabi Typing on Windows 11 (PSSSB Typing Test Guide)

Set up Raavi Punjabi typing on Windows 11 in 10 minutes — add Punjabi, install the font, pick INSCRIPT, and practise for the PSSSB 30 WPM test.

PSSSB has fixed the font for its Punjabi typing tests: Raavi. Advertisement No. 12 of 2026 states that the Punjabi typing test for its Clerk posts will be taken on computer in the Unicode-compliant Raavi font, at 30 words per minute. If your computer isn't set up for Raavi, you can't practise the way the exam is conducted. ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸੈੱਟਅਪ, ਫਿਰ ਸਪੀਡ — this guide gets your Windows 11 PC ready in about ten minutes.

In short

  • Raavi is a Microsoft font. It ships with Windows as part of an optional feature called Gurmukhi Supplemental Fonts.
  • To type Gurmukhi you also need the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language, which adds the Punjabi INSCRIPT keyboard by default.
  • Switch between English and Punjabi with Windows key + Spacebar. The taskbar shows ਪੰ when Punjabi is active.

Why Raavi, and why setup matters

Raavi is a Unicode Gurmukhi font. Every letter you type is stored as a real Gurmukhi character, so the text reads correctly on any device and can be copied into any modern software. Older fonts such as Asees work differently — they map Gurmukhi shapes onto English keys, so the same keystrokes produce a different result in Raavi.

That is why the exam font matters. PSSSB's current notification names Raavi, so the typing you practise at home should use the Raavi font with a Unicode Punjabi keyboard, not a legacy font. If you want the full comparison, read Asees vs Raavi vs Anmollipi: which font PSSSB needs.

Step 1 — Add the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Next to Preferred languages, select Add a language.
  3. Search for and select Punjabi (Gurmukhi), then select Next → Install.

This adds the Punjabi INSCRIPT keyboard automatically. You don't need to change your Windows display language — English menus stay as they are.

Step 2 — Make sure the Raavi font is installed

Open Word (or WordPad), click the font box and type Raavi. If it appears in the list, you're done — skip to Step 3.

If it doesn't appear, install Microsoft's font package:

  1. Open Settings → System → Optional features.
  2. Next to Add an optional feature, select View features.
  3. Search for Gurmukhi Supplemental Fonts, tick it, select Next, then Add.

This package installs Raavi and Raavi Bold. You can also download the Raavi font from our font page and install it by double-clicking the file.

Step 3 — Choose the keyboard: INSCRIPT or Phonetic

Windows offers two Punjabi keyboards:

KeyboardHow it worksUse it for
Punjabi INSCRIPT (added by default)Each key has a fixed Gurmukhi letter, in the standard Indian-script layoutExam practice — build muscle memory on a fixed layout
Punjabi Phonetic (optional)You type the sound in English letters and Windows converts itEveryday typing (messages, documents) — not for building exam speed

To add Phonetic: on the Language & region page, select the … next to Punjabi (Gurmukhi) → Language options → Add a keyboard → Punjabi Phonetic.

A caution: the PSSSB notification names the font (Raavi) but does not name the keyboard layout. INSCRIPT is the Windows default for Punjabi and the layout Raavi practice normally uses, so it's the safe choice — but check the typing-test instructions on your admit card when they are released, and follow them if they say otherwise.

Step 4 — Switch and test

  1. Press Windows key + Spacebar to switch keyboards, or click the language indicator in the taskbar. ਪੰ means Punjabi is active.
  2. Open Word, select the Raavi font, and type a few words.
  3. If you see proper Gurmukhi, your setup is ready for practice.

How to practise for 30 WPM

PSSSB's Clerk posts in Advertisement 12/2026 need 30 words per minute in Punjabi and English, and the typing test is qualifying — you must pass it, but merit comes from the written exam. So the goal is to clear 30 WPM comfortably, not to chase top speed.

  1. Learn the layout first. Work through the Raavi tutorial lessons before timing yourself. ਸ਼ੁੱਧਤਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਗਤੀ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ।
  2. Time short tests daily. Use the Raavi Punjabi typing test to track your speed and accuracy.
  3. Build stamina with 10 minutes. Once you're near 30 WPM, switch to the 10-minute Raavi test so speed holds for the full test length.
  4. Don't skip English. Keep a regular slot for the English typing tests — you have to clear both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Raavi already installed on my Windows PC?
Often, but not always. Microsoft lists Raavi under the optional Gurmukhi Supplemental Fonts feature. Check the font list in Word; if it's missing, install that feature from Settings → System → Optional features.

Q: Do I need to change Windows to Punjabi to type in Raavi?
No. Adding Punjabi (Gurmukhi) as an input language is enough. Your menus stay in English.

Q: Which Punjabi keyboard should I use for the PSSSB typing test?
The notification specifies the Raavi font but not the keyboard. INSCRIPT is the Windows default and the standard layout for Raavi practice. Follow the admit card instructions if they specify one.

Q: What typing speed does PSSSB need for Clerk posts?
Advertisement No. 12 of 2026 sets 30 words per minute in both English and Punjabi, tested on computer.

Q: Can I type in Asees and submit in Raavi?
No. Asees and Raavi use different systems. Text typed in Asees must be converted to become Unicode, and in a live typing test you type directly in the exam's font.

Q: How do I switch between English and Punjabi quickly?
Press Windows key + Spacebar. The taskbar shows ਪੰ when Punjabi is active.
